A Remembering Kind of Day

Good morning. This is Your Leap Day Briefing, February 29, 2012.

Today’s briefing will live up to its name. Suzanne went to visit her mom.

This extra day comes around every four years, but otherwise, February has usually turned into March without much fanfare, or by me attaching any significance to it.

In all of our lives, there are days that stamp themselves in our memory for any number of reasons, births, deaths, weddings, divorces, anniversaries, etc. Today is one of those days for me though it doesn’t involve any of those events, and it isn’t a sad kind of day, just a remembering kind of day.

This extra day in February would pass unnoticed by me, that is, if it weren’t a day that carries one of those memories I can’t escape. For it was on that Friday afternoon, February 29, 2008 when Joanie came home from her job with the Hoeven Committee. She stayed. Quite frankly, I haven’t thought of that date very often in the intervening four years, maybe because there hasn’t been a 29th of February since then.

Today I am.

Take care, be well and keep in touch.

Retired reporter. Concentrating now on recounting Joanie's 12 year battle with cancer, a battle she waged with extreme courage, determination and an indomitable spirit, that, for me, serves as an example.
